politics @lemmy.world•'Absolutely Pathetic': Senate Democrats Denounced for Caving to GOP in Shutdown Fight | Common Dreams
10·5 days agothe question of why?
It protects their investments for them and their families. Political tidal shifts on corporate ownership of critical infrastructure like housing is unacceptable for their economy. And their electability?
they’re all people who have announced that they will retire after this term.
They are expressly the ones that can afford this action: explicitly burning goodwill to secure wealth. They’re spending currency that has no value to them.
It doesn’t even have to be backdoor dealings. It is all very front door.

133·5 days agoI am willing to bet this was on some level retaliatory for Mamdani’s election. All these senators represent a faction that’s currently sundowning. For them, this kind of action is a message.

politics @lemmy.world•Democrat who caved on shutdown says Chuck Schumer knew all along
21·5 days agoSchumer has zero control over his party when even the party whip pledges to defect. But he apparently refused to vote for the Democratic candidate for NYC mayor, so this is entirely expected and precedented.

2·7 days agoShe is just running circles around media establishments. Speaker Greene is going to be wild. Or at least that’s what she’s after. Every House GOPer is going to need a pivot and she will be that for them.

1·8 days agoI get it. I had meant ‘modern’ more than anything and ‘english’ was the convenient assumption.
I was trying note along the idea of how we only know Spartan history from Athenian accounts of Sparta, not Spartans. If all we had was specifically a christian interpretation of the texts then yeah, conclusions can be as varied as the reader. If we interpret the bible through contemporary historical observations the importance of the lessons and stories of the bible are provided context.
The christian traditions around the bible and the historical context through which the bible was written and interpreted are very different.
But that isn’t to undermine or remove the fact that there is a long tradition of interpreting these passages as to include masturbation. (If not the concept of sodomy at large.) But to me that’s likewise as understandably contexualized.

3·8 days agoBecause a straight reading of the part imo does make it about wasting seed insted of procreating and the interpretations I can find go with that interpretation.
History? Mesopotamian history? It wouldn’t be an individual’s personal reaction to one of the english translations of the text.
There’s a great deal of information, especially from greek and persian sources that describe the rules and laws of the region during biblical times. Like the septanguit was a major greek translation that entered judean laws and customs to greek analysis.
And then we have early roman history that conquered the region and documented the rules of local religions/cults.
Again, it isn’t derived from a vibe check of plain text like when SCOTUS overturns human rights.

World News@lemmy.world•Zohran Mamdani wins NYC mayor's race, capping a stunning ascentEnglish
771·11 days agoOne of the more interesting polls out of this was whether voters were casting in support of or against a candidate.
86% of Mamdani voters were voting out of support of their candidate.
Half of Cuomo voters were voting against another candidate. (Mamdani.)
Voting against a candidate is a losing strategy.

5·15 days agoYou’d be looking at some early 20th century interpretations of leftism though, which is an important nuance. Lenin was a member of the Russian Social Democrats, but most people probably wouldn’t attribute his legacy to Social Democracy.
Cruz spent four years shitting all over California and New York, effectively handing these states to Trump in the 2016 primary.
But that’s also why he’s such an entrenched incumbent as a Senator. Texas chuds love it even if they hate him personally: shitting on coastal elites forgives all.

Games@lemmy.world•Nearly 90% of Windows Games now run on Linux, latest data shows — as Windows 10 dies, gaming on Linux is more viable than everEnglish
2·18 days agoIt is a perfect baseline OS. It gets people connected to Steam faster and easier to Windows, which is the main access to most games.
Biggest obstacles to venturing out in Linux is the documentation for everything is not built or assuming normie users. The default assumption of competancy does not exist in Windows manuals.
But even so using Homebrew in Bazzite is no more complex than in Windows.

It’ll be taken care of by the new Microsoft CEO: Miguel Sanchez.
