I’m a massive fan of the original Final Fantasy VII—it’s one of those games that defined my childhood. Recently, someone in my retro gaming podcast community voted for me to cover Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII, and I’ve never actually played it myself. I remember it getting a pretty mixed reception back when it released in 2006 because it ditched the classic turn-based RPG formula for something more action-oriented. I watched my brother play bits of it, and it looked like a third-person shooter with Vincent as the star, which felt kinda off at the time. Not sure if I’d love it or hate it.
So, is Dirge a good game overall? What should I know going into it—pros, cons, tips for enjoying it, or any lore connections to the Compilation (like Advent Children or Crisis Core) that make it worthwhile? Does it hold up today, especially after the Remake trilogy?
Also I’m always looking for new guest speakers. If you’re interested, feel free to DM me.
Thanks in advance for the insights!
It wasn’t worth it back then never mind now. It’s as generic as it gets and the only thing it has going for it is additional FF7 lore.
As someone who enjoyed shooters at the time this game released, I liked it. The gun building system wasn’t anything groundbreaking, but I thought it was fun and allowed you to try different play styles. Story is a bit out there and was never considered canon (till recently with the remakes) but I’d be damned if I did play a game attached to the FF7 universe. Takes place after Advent children if I remember correctly.
Tips: keep moving, keep shooting, enjoy it for what it is.
Well, it’s not a long game. It’s like 6 hours. So if you’re interested, just play it and form your own opinion.
I played it for some time back when I had my PS2.
Don’t remember well the details, but basically I found it lackluster and repetitive as a 3rd person shooter, and not that deep as an RPG in terms of character/equipment customization. Overall, it leaves to be desired.
As to the lore, up to where I stopped playing, there wasn’t much that tied it to the main games, and looked like just a “gaiden” game, but don’t trust my memory.
Ultimately, I ended up getting bored partway through. Some people may find it fun. I guess it’s just not for me.
