Donald Trump has been accused of “turning the military on American citizens” after a Pentagon official confirmed that planning is under way to send National Guard troops to Chicago.

Illinois attorney-general Kwame Raoul also told CBS News that the president’s actions are both “un-American” and “unwise strategically”.

Accusing the president of “turning our military on American citizens in his ongoing attempts to move our nation toward authoritarianism,” he added:

His actions are not just un-American. They are unwise strategically. Our cities are not made safer by deploying the nation’s service members for civilian law enforcement duties when they do not have the appropriate training.

To be clear: We have made no such request for the type of federal intervention we have seen in Los Angeles or Washington DC. There is no emergency in the state of Illinois.

Yep, I expect he’ll do one or more of SF, NYC, or Boston next. Probably Boston, because it’s smaller. Then again, the optics and actual operational details of trying to subjugate the city that’s known for being the first major flashpoint of the original American revolution could get… shall we say… interesting. We’ve got a lot of very smart people out here that would be Very Not Down with a fascist takeover. And intelligent, angry, highly motivated people can and will fuck you up.

Would love to see the “crime statistics” justification for sending troops to Boston, too, like they’ve been doing for DC, LA, and Chicago.

“Boston is an anarchist hellscape, there are only 70 other major American cities with worse rates of violent crime. Look here, a black Bostonian woman with a 2-day-old Twitter profile tweeted how badly she wants us to come and save Boston from all the gangs and the drugs. You’ve got people living in fear of a horrifying ‘green monster’ that no one’s managed to deal with for over 100 years, can you believe it? And no, we’re not taking any questions at this time about the other 5 cities in Texas or 4 cities in Tennessee that have significantly worse crime stats.”
