The fact that another great artist, William-Adolphe Bouguereau, owned this painting once is a bit of art history nerd knowledge that is fun to learn. Bouguereau’s depiction of the human body and skin tones is, in my opinion, the most talented.
My god, I just looked up some of his art - The Flagellation of Christ - you’re not kidding. The realism and movement - he’s captured a split second in time like a camera. Just incredible.
