Has China ever expressed interest in joining NATO? Was there ever actually a declinature?

NATO has always been an anticommunist war machine principally aimed at the USSR and its allies. It was originally staffed with actual Nazis, too.
Or is this another way I’m blinded by western media and China has been begging to get into NATO and they’re just not reporting it in my sheeple network?
