  • western tankies especially can be very weird

Right, and they call anyone who disagrees with them, even actual communists, “McCarthyists” 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Seriously though, anyone who sees any reason whatsoever for communists to support the Iranian government mustn’t have a single fucking clue what communism is about… They’re a fucking joke (if only they didn’t go around giving leftists such a bad name)…

That’s a fantastic, and not at all surprising piece of information though, thanks for sharing!

  • Tankies are people who claim to be communists, but who exclusively support authoritarians and their oppressive regimes, past and present, because these authoritarians call themselves communists (think believing Nazis were socialists because it was in their party name), even though their actions have nothing at all to do with communism, and fascists co-opting leftist language to gain power being a well documented phenomenon.

It’s pretty easy to tell really: if a project is/was stateless, classless, and moneyless - congratulations, it’s almost certainly communism, and those who support it are communists (or possibly one of several varieties of anarchist, like myself).

However if one or any of those conditions aren’t met, and/or there is a single dictator or a small group of cronies holding on to power claiming they’ve been met, but the reality is clearly different - congratulations, you basically have run of the mill fascism on your hands and those who support it are tankies (who, as I pointed out in OP, almost always speak up and in defence of a “dear leader” but never in defence of the people themselves, because all they care about is the regime, not the people living under it).

In the case of the fediverse, there are a couple of dedicated instances almost exclusively occupied by tankies, who have made it their goal to essentially troll and brigade anyone who doesn’t agree with their, frankly bizarre, views (calling it “dialectics” to make themselves feel better). They’re generally easy to avoid though, by blocking individuals, or their entire instance.

  • No, what there has been is an increase in an already prevalent phenomenon (see: mass shooters) of blaming mental illness and/or personality disorders for abusive, violent, and flat out fascistic actions, when they don’t actually cause those, it’s just so much easier to do than to think more deeply and/or critically about the systems and structures that don’t only enable, but encourage such behaviour, especially in those with privilege and power (because actually mentally ill people are much more likely to be victims of violence and other abuse, than perpetrate it).

Using diagnosable conditions as shorthand for “abusive” or “toxic” or “harmful” or “violent” or “racist” or whatever else, is ableism. It deepens already existing and harmful stigmas, prevents people from seeking help and support and being open about their struggles, and actually puts them at greater risk of further abuse just for being diagnosed the way they are, even if they’ve never hurt a fly.

    In short:

“Are you saying that murderers are right in the head??”
No there’s definitely something wrong with someone’s way of thinking if they can justify killing innocent people, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that they have a mental illness.
Extremist beliefs isn’t a mental illness.
    Bigotry isn’t a mental illness.
    Entitlement isn’t a mental illness.
    Hate isn’t a mental illness.
Having a dysfunctional moral compass isn’t a mental illness.
We need to stop categorizing all these things as some undefinable “mental illness” and start looking at what we do as a society to develop and justify these things to a degree where people use them to justify killing.
    Yes!
Dehumanization is something you Have to look for. If the murderer doesn’t see the person they killed as a person, then mental illness is probably not the main factor there.
Plenty of people murder women, poc, lgbt people, people of other religions etc. because they don’t see them as people.
Think about genocides - they aren’t perpetrated by big group of people/a government who all got mentally ill together the same way at the same time somehow, they just didn’t consider what they did murder because they didn’t see the victims as people.

  • If it won’t let me untick all but the essential cookies easily - close tab, move on.

Recently I realised that some “reject all” options still don’t reject the “legitimate” bullshit, so I now avoid those sites too (and no, I don’t trust that extensions that claim to reject all for me will actually reject all).

I’ve got better things to do with my time than scrutinise these cookie pop ups and/or go through lengthy lists individually unticking options. Fuck that noise - don’t have minimal respect for users? Then I’m definitely not providing you any of my data (the sites that make it the hardest rarely hold information you can’t easily find elsewhere)…

  • Lmfao, anyone still putting their hopes of abolishing capitalism in electoral politics (or the governments that result, and their actions), at the very least, hasn’t been paying any attention, and has very little to no understanding of how the systems at play work and interact.

Playing by their rules within their game (this includes not only electoral politics, but also shit like using housing as a commodity, however supposedly noble the intent) is never going to set anyone free from it.
