Technology@lemmy.world•Microsoft is working to rebuild trust in WindowsEnglish
2·2 days agoIf they would produce a super stable, backward compatible system without “AI”, without tons of dark patterns and with a traditional UI… let’s say, a Windows 7 reboot with compatibility to modern software and released under a Free license… then I would honestly take a look.

Technology@lemmy.world•Windows 10's extended support ends in eight months, but users are still rejecting Windows 11, at least in GermanyEnglish
2·2 days agoJust to be a bit heretical: Its absolutely possible to install Windows 11 on unsupported hardware, look up Rufus, download the ISO from Microsoft and on you go.
I have managed to get it running on a NUC with a two core and 2 GB RAM after also running a debloat script.
edit: Completed post after my 3 year old crashed into me sending the phone into the neitherworld under the couch
Ah… you mean its better at providing a more potent form of a digital drug? Ok…

The Iphone entered the marked in 2007, before that is what entirely possible to connect a PDA to the internet via you dumbphone (using IRC from my palm pilot in the 90s surely felt cool…)
Recently i feel the years piling up on me… i mean, for me, personaly, in my feelings, a C64 is old, a Core2Duo with 2 GB RAM is still a pretty decent office machine, i still convert € to DM in my head and an Xbox 360 is still the console i was well too eager to buy
a couple of years… goddamn… about 20 years ago.

World News@lemmy.world•‘It’s not too late to fix it’: internet inventor Tim Berners-Lee says he is in a ‘battle for the soul of the web’English
6·3 days agoYes PLEASE! The Internet is so, so much more than the Web, it existed before it and it will exist long after the Web has been gone.
The INTERNET as a whole also has still many places that are still healthy and far away from enshittification.

Technology@lemmy.world•RAM Prices Got You Down? Try DDR3. Seriously!English
1·6 days agoYeah, i also have backups of my files… but every single time such a failure occured was when i under no circumstances needed a downtime like that (important project to finish, holidays where all shops are closed…) and i simply developed some superstition regarding SSDs.
It also wasn’t brand specific, i had it happen with Sandisk and Verbatim so far.

81·7 days agoI write this post from a Core2Quad machine with 8 GB of DDR2 RAM and a spinning harddisk… and the system feels quiet fast and nimble.
You could use Linux without ever touching the CLI at least at the release of SuSE Linux 7.0 back in 2000. I bought the the boxed version directly as it was available in the stores back then and it really was a revelation: From first install, installing software up to configuring runlevels there was a graphical tool in Yast for it.

World News@lemmy.world•German media likens US border patrol official’s coat to ‘Nazi look’English
2·8 days agoThe thing is: The original Nazis had style (believe me: I have pictures of my grandfather that - if you leave the whole genocide thing aside - simply look cool), those cosplayers in that rogue British colony? Not so much.

Technology@lemmy.world•Android won't kill sideloading after all, but new verification rules will make it harderEnglish
1·10 days agoThere is already postmarketOS if you have an old supported phone somewhere in the drawer… it has still some rough edges, but it works and gives a nice glimpse into that ecosystem.

Well, it is what de create, right? Why not encouraging people creating short form videos that are decisively not brain-rot?
