Science Memes@mander.xyz•On the seventh day, god created uraniumEnglish
6·20 days agoCarbon-14 dating only works back to about 50,000 years, most fossils are older than that and they use radiometric dating.
(Not a scientist, I’m sure my wording will make experts cringe, but I think my gist is good)
Fossils are basically rocks that form around hard things like bones. They look at radioactive elements in the rock and figure out how much has decayed and they know when the rock was formed.
Uranium lead dating is one of the most used methods. In it, they look at zircon crystals and measure the amount of uranium and lead. Uranium decays into lead, so that tells them how long the decay has been happening.
That always seemed sketchy to me, how do they know it didn’t just have a bunch of lead in it to start with? Then I learned something…
When zircon forms, lead can’t bind with it and it gets pushed out of the zircon. Uranium doesn’t get pushed out, so there are small pockets of uranium in fresh zircon and no lead. A million years later, we just look at how much lead and uranium there is and get a very good idea at when it was formed.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL that "horology" is a term for the study of timeEnglish
9·20 days agoThat’s worded poorly. I guess literally it translates as the “study of time” but physicists study the concept of time, and nobody would say they’re doing horology. If you read on it explains it’s the study of the measurement of time in general but horology has specifically come to refer to mechanical timekeeping devices. Watch and clockmakers are horologists, watch collectors may say they’re “into horology.”
It is like horoscope in that “horo” refers to time. Horoscopes are the “study” of the time of a person’s birth and how that affects their life or whatever.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Technically, it should be possible to built a pot that uses the heat from the stove to stir it's ingredients.English
5·21 days agoThere are things called stovetop fans that look like just a metal base with a fan attached to it, but they have a Peltier module or Stirling engine hidden inside. They use heat from the stove to turn the fan and blow warm air around the room. Should be able to make something using that trick that sticks down into a pot and stirs things. The thickness of the stuff being stirred will be the issue.

51·1 month agoIt’s been a few years but I don’t remember it being too hard to set up. I did it on slackware, compiling everything from source, so anybody should be able to do it on a distro with dependency resolution.
They provided a zip file that is updated every so often (hourly?) and contains data for your specific region. I just used that. It does have an option that people can use their own data, but I think it’s because most NWS offices run this model in addition to the national models they get from upstream. No normal person has enough input data to be useful.

381·1 month agoI haven’t done it in a few years but I used to run my own weather model. If fed the correct data and given time to crunch the numbers, several times a day you can create your own weather forecast that is probably (hopefully) similar to the freely available forecasts from the weather service, TV, radio and apps.

One problem with Christian morals is that God was immoral in the Bible. He told the Hebrews to attack people and commit genocide. He told them to kill every man woman and child. He specified that infants and sucklings were to be killed. When David sinned, he punished him by killing his son and having ten of his wives raped in public, he sends bears to attack children, he almost makes Ezekiel eat bread cooked with human shit, but is persuaded to allow cow shit instead.
So you read “You shall not kill” and think that’s a pretty good moral, but then you read God saying he is going to kill everybody and have pregnant women ripped open and their babies dashed against rocks. There’s not many ways to reconcile that except to say he’s God, he can do whatever he wants.
That opens up the idea that, if you’re doing what god wants, you can probably get away with a lot of shit too. If you steal from this elderly person, you’ll put the money to good use, so god would want that. If you lie and cheat, well, you’re on mission from God and you gotta break eggs to make an omelette.
Morals are flexible to God, so if you get your morals from God they’re flexible for you too. And if not, it’s ok, you just get forgiven anyway.
