  • Weird, because my experience with science and mathematics is that everything I learned only leads to more questions. I personally preferred taking a small chunk of that knowledge and using it to do real-world stuff which was always surprisingly complicated but satisfying. An engineer that “guesses” is not a very good one IMO lol

    You are waaaay overthinking this.

It’s a crossover meme from trans/gender-nonconforming spaces. We have ways of finding humor in what is often an frightening and deadly serious situation (being trans in this world).

One of the in-jokes we have that I saw quite a bit on reddit, is that especially trans women and femboys “are all programmers or IT people” and being technical minded, use Linux. (I’m a trans woman who uses Fedora… Hi)

I think there is also the political and economic association that comes with FOSS – it’s a sort of disruption of the norm in capitalism, which is to have proprietary secrets as a store of value. FOSS challenges the notion that the fruits of labor should be privitized. In that sense it’s a radical movement, always has been, even if it has been adopted by the world at large.

Trans folk are as a rule, politically left-leaning, it seems these days we must be to exist, and so FOSS like Linux naturally appeals to the community.

Obviously there are going to be many non-technical trans people, and tech trans people alike who use proprietary OSes; and conversely most Linux users aren’t trans or GNC. The meme isn’t meant to be taken literally or to change anyone’s beliefs or actions.

  • I think there is a difference.

Basically all animals will attack other animals when they invade their home space. Even insects do so and it can be brutal. Speaking outside of human moral constructs, you wouldn’t be out of line for killing a rat or even a cat that was unwelcome in your home. Life will do what it can to ensure survival.

But it’s easier to feel empathy for what is more similar to us. So, mammals, for example. Domesticated and tame animals that have adapted to humans.

I suggest making small efforts to cultivate compassion even for the creepiest insects, by taking a cup, bowl, or piece of paper and taking them outside. Now it could be argued whether this is doing them any favors, but I feel better about that compared to just smashing them.

It may sound ridiculous but yes I did reach the point where I am affected by any life I take, and really strive to avoid it where possible. I have “mutual arrangements” with a variety of insects in my house, such as small spiders. They stay out of my way, and I let them take care of other insects that slip through the cracks.
