i think that cock.li’s experience is common for volunteer organizations in the american government’s cross hairs and i forsee an expansion of something like this onto open source projects & platforms like lemmy in the future given some of the public manifestations we’ve seen in the news like the american’s governments geopolitical posturing forcing the linux kernel project maintainers to expel russian contributors.

the american’s governments restriction on open source projects like the linux kernel is a portent of what’s to come and the entire FOSS world is going to be split into 2 because of it and with the better financed half being undeniably under the government’s control, but its contributors will continue to call it “free and open sourced software” nonetheless due to having the most leverage (for now).

  • the fediverse is designed to guard against the same kind of enshitification that reddit went into by keeping the same discourse alive everywhere regardless whether you use mastodon or lemmy or any other social media platform.

social media tribalism guarantees eventual enshitification of some kind, so keeping your options open makes sense should you ever decide to set sail on the fediverse sea after the people on your platform island have burned it all down due to the local culture war they insisted on fighting until its pointless end.

i’ve been switching from one social media platform to another since the 1990’s because of enshitification and that’s taught me that the platforms with investors behind it enshitify the in the worse ways possible (eg reddit, facebook, bluesky, etc.). so i think that the fediverse has the biggest and likeliest chance to survive all enshitification because of how it’s designed to keep the discourse alive no matter how many power tripping mods or majority conversation shaping admins there are. (at least for now).

  • i don’t think that it’ll be ubi as we understand it today and i don’t doubt that they’ll enshitify it as much as possible into the future since i’m also aware that both social security and unemployment were half measures intended to deter neuter revolutionary thought within the united states during the last time we had to deal with major socioeconomic changes that was pushing the country leftwards.

ubi (in whatever form it takes and at least at the beginning) will buy us time and i think that it’s a silver lining that helps alleviate the anxiety from knowing about the work that lays ahead of us when theory doesn’t provide needful encouragement; we’re human beings & americans so we need time to adjust to reality after we’ve been living in ignorance like this our entire lives and also to learn how to focus on the positives & victories no matter how small they seem to be right now.

the theory i’ve “read” so far (not much yet) doesn’t address the humanity of what the person has to go through in order to leave plato’s cave and we’re going to need silver linings and laughter to get through another trump administration; just like we did the last time things looked this bad for us.

  • i’ve recently discovered a youtube channel with content a LOT like this and i wish i could find it in my subscriptions list to share it with you here.

i subscribed because they got an ancient but serviceable packard bell and upgraded is as far as it could go into windows me or 98 (i forget which) and then test drove it as a daily driver using a light weight linux distribution with the internet now.

i’ve been a youtube user for over 20 years and my subscription list is in dire need of curation and i only have 15ish minutes before the build results are available so bump up this post if any of what i just described sounds appealing to you and i can look it up.

  • i’ve started this series on youtube named "The Anti Imperialism of Star Trek Deep Space Nine" and i learned that, once you subscribe and like a leftist channel & video that the algorithms start bombarding you with leftist videos and youtubers.

i feel like a alaskan bear during a salmon run trying to catch all the salmon it can before they all die off in mass a few days they’ve mated as i try to identify which youtuber to subscribe to and which video to click like button on as the algorithms keep showing me multiple new ones every day. lol

also: i find that melding (word play intended) in the little bits of theory that i can get from youtube alongside a life long passion; like i did for myself with star trek; makes me more eager to finish it and makes it kinda fun.

  • it’s also gives you fantastic control over dosage and quality. i grow my own flower and make my own edibles and i think i’ve perfected the right recipes that work through trial and error and it was kinda fun doing it too.

it taught me that i need more hobbies in my life and now i’m pursuing creating a brand new daily driver linux laptop to that end.

  • that’s in interesting perspective since i’m seeing the opposite with responses to all the questions.

i go through asklemmy every morning while i’m caffeinating at the start of each day because the questions usually wake me up with a WTF or a TIL.

i must be on their blocked list. lol

also: i wonder at how it weighs on your soul & outlook to feel like you have to curate such a list in a safe space.
