Technology@lemmy.world•The Authoritarian StackEnglish
45·5 months agoThis is really great (and by great I mean terrifying to see it all laid out plainly). The only nitpick is the idea that the model “is coming to europe next” … as if this whole thing wasn’t kicked off by Brexit and the Cambridge Analytica scandal. Europe was the testing bed for this a decade or more ago.

Technology@lemmy.world•I went to an anti-tech rally, where Gen Z dressed as gnomes and smashed iPhones. Here's what I learned. | Business InsiderEnglish
121·6 months agoExcellent, insightful comment and I very much appreciate and resonate with this response.
I do think the protest serves to raise awareness, even if it’s a bit extreme. The desired effect is not really to encourage the complete rejection of tech, but bring attention to the issues and get the average person to think a little more about their usage of it. I’m actually kind of proud of these young folks for being able to snap themselves out of the social media-induced hypnotic state their generation seems to be stuck in.

politics @lemmy.world•‘Americans are democracy’s equivalent of second-generation wealth’: a Chinese journalist on the US under Trump
2311·6 months agoHe goes on to say
[Americans] were born into democracy and have no appreciation of what life is like without it. Chinese people, on the other hand, “have been bullied by rulers for thousands of years. We’re very familiar with these situations.”
Buddy that looks worse for you. The Chinese have been dealing with it for thousands of years but haven’t managed to do anything about it? If this was some kind of flex, it’s a weird one.

Not The Onion@lemmy.world•Trump Says Critical Coverage of Him Is ‘Really Illegal’English
16·7 months agoCompletely agree and thank you for saying exactly what needs to be said. I oftwn ask how did we get here? This timeline is so far off from the one I came to expect even like 10 years ago. How do we get back to a more stable, less angry society?

politics @lemmy.world•This professor studies dictatorships. He helped convince Harvard to stand up to Trump
31·1 year agoDude Harvard didn’t even stand up to defend their own president Claudine Gay when she needed their backing. They were dead silent during trumps first term when this same shit was going on. It’s not just the money. They will literally sit on their asses and say nothing unless they are pushed.
100% agree. Why are people like this?

Technology@lemmy.ml•Why you’ll leave X (as well as Instagram and all the other private platforms)
181·1 year agoThis is definitely worth a read and I very much hope the author’s predictions come true, but I think it misses the mark in two big areas.
-
This article presumes these platforms will remain the same. In reality these companies will pull out all the stops to incentivize users to stay, and if that doesn’t work they will just buy up and acquire the competition, wherever the users are. Look at what’s happening with tiktok.
-
Some users - believe it or not - want a way to keep up with IRL friends and acquaintances. Instagram and Facebook provided a great way to do this (however less “great” nowadays). Still, I don’t want to email or text every single person I know just to share a photo or a recent event. And honestly I also don’t want every acquaintance I have sharing every detail of their lives over text or email or phone. Even with an alternative, we’d have to find and rebuild our personal networks all over again.

0·1 year agoDude, she had like 100 days to put together a campaign. She had to make a gamble and trust that the 2020 Dem voters were already in her corner so she could go after some big fish with the little time she had.
