Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL the number of pedestrians killed by drivers in the U.S. rose by 70 percent between 2010 and 2023English
22·6 days agoYou don’t like the ‘pedestrian mower’ trucks, where the driver can’t see anything that’s less than 30 feet in front of them? Weird. /s

Games@lemmy.world•Epic boss Tim Sweeney thinks stores like Steam should stop labelling games as being made with AI: 'It makes no sense,' he says, because 'AI will be involved in nearly all future productionEnglish
89·6 days agoI don’t want AI-generated assets in games at the expense of past, present, and future artists – artists that created all the source material in the first place and had it pirated by corporations who had enough money to ignore all existing IP law globally.
If Tim Sweeney is fine with pirating other’s art, he should be cool with people pirating his games.

That said, it looks attractive and promising.

World News@lemmy.world•Italy now recognizes the crime of femicide and punishes it with life in prisonEnglish
101·8 days agoFeminism has a place, but it is explicitly about promoting women’s interests – something which if allowed to continue unchecked, leads to significant disadvantages for men.
I think that’s a dangerous belief. I don’t see the difference between saying that and saying “Equality for black people has a place, but it is explicitly about promoting black interests – something which if left allowed to continue unchecked, leads to significant disadvantages to whites.”

6·8 days agoSome people argue that intent shouldn’t be considered when sentencing people for their crimes.
I believe intent impacts a perpetrator’s potential rehabilitation (something a lot of countries put very little effort into when keeping people incarcerated) and should therefore affect sentencing.

177·8 days agoCasually throwing feminism under the bus – a movement that focuses on women’s issues (to the overall societal benefit of everyone) – for focusing on women’s issues?
Huh. Is this socially acceptable now? I thought we were better than this.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Browser Fingerprinting And Why VPNs Won’t Make You Anonymous
2·12 days agoThere is a browser extension called Chameleon that will spoof a fair amount of data, but after testing it against one of those fingerprint test sites, it looks like it doesn’t/can’t spoof everything.

In the US, “doxxing” laws are pretty much state-by-state and many may be violating the first amendment.

Games@sh.itjust.works•Nearly half of US kids want in-game currency this ChristmasEnglish
111·13 days agoI didn’t see a link to the survey in the article so I found it on the ESA website.
The survey says that 58% of kids want games, but it doesn’t seem to specify what percentage of kids want in-game currency?; it simply says that in-game currency is one of the top five video-game related requests, at 43%. But 43% of what? 43% of kids who want games? It’s not specific, which would make the news article meaningless.

Technology@lemmy.world•Your Smartphone, Their Rules: How App Stores Enable Corporate-Government Censorship | ACLUEnglish
1·14 days agoYeah Apple is straight up user hostile to people running apps on MacOS not signed by Apple, and I don’t know why more people don’t talk about it and push back against it. They are one step away from removing the ability to freely install software on your own computer.
I don’t use itunes on mac or ios, so I use an app called NoTunes on MacOS that kills the itunes app whenever it launches.
Friendly reminder that Reolink cameras need to be denied internet access / isolated on the network because they constantly reach out to a bunch of Chinese IP addresses.
I am assuming you aren’t rooted? Ad Away works beautifully to block ads system-wide but it does require root.

Hey a fellow Phoenotopia Awakening fan!
I love that game but I made the mistake of putting it down for a year. When I came back I was completely lost and had no idea what I had already done or what to do next. The game does not have quest logs and does not hold your hand this way. It’s a game where people might benefit from documenting their progress as they go, especially in case they ever take a break from it.
