Interesting, I already use cloudflare DNS and had “proxy” turned on for nextcloud, but I still had to open 80 and 443 on my router, so I’ll look up how to set up the free tunnel sometime

Thanks for the information. I will have to look into SNI and see if my router can support it – if I move someday to an ISP behind a more restrictive firewall, this system looks pretty good. (Or if I get unhappy with one reverse proxy handling everything).
Thank you, this looks like a great guide
Thanks, this is definitely the way I would like to go!
I would like to use tailscale for some services, but the ones I access from public computers, like nextcloud or blog hosting, can’t be behind a VPN.
I would love the Synology to Synology backup to be behind the VPN, but I’m not sure I’ll be able to get it working, so that is lower down on my list.
Things like Jitsi would be cool to have behind the vpn, but then I’d have to get everyone to install tailscale on their phones and configure access, so that’s going to be too complicated for me and my family unfortunately.
I guess I’m wondering who will hire the people to do that work? I assume a company that is allowed to have profit will be able to offer higher wages to be competitive
That reminds me of REI in America. They’re technically a member-owned co-op, but they’re definitely a huge corporation making buckets for somebody, probably the leadership. So a non profit version of that
I wonder who is disproportionately sent to jail…?
That makes sense to me
I am just wondering who would do all the work of warehousing, distributing, etc., if there was no profit motive.
If it’s a fine then it’s effectively only illegal for poor people – unless the fine scales with wealth
Wouldn’t that just push sales into the black market? Unless the government nationalized the sale of cigarettes, which seems… not great, if they believe in smoking cessation
Phew, for a moment I worried that 2.9999… was divisible by 7 and I woke up in some kind of alternate universe
There is a theory that sanctions against a country with a tyrannical ruler hurt the common people more than the oligarchs / dictator. But eventually they do make life more difficult for that ruler
Imo it’s a waste for police to pull anyone over for this, unless they’re actually a danger to someone. Biking and being on the phone is way safer than driving a 1000 pound battering ram with limited visibility doing the same.
I used to bike like this when I was a teenager, and I try not to now. If someone was in the crosswalk, I’d slightly adjust my speed and path to pass behind or in front of them as space allowed, just like they were any other obstacle. Because I didn’t realize how unpleasant it feels to be startled by a bike going past, or even if you know they’re coming it’s still uncomfortable that they’re going fast.
As a biker it took me a lot of life experience to realize that even if the situation was perfectly safe (I’ve always been in control and never hit anyone), pedestrians are not unreasonable for disliking bikes riding fast in their personal space.
But in a lot of countries, bikes have to be like pedestrians sometimes because the bike infrastructure is so spotty or non-existant. You’ll try to use the bike path but it just ends. Or there’s so safe way to turn left, or whatever.
But in other places, like Berlin, Germany, old people will yell at you if you’re biking in the wrong place and it’s pretty great because there’s usually a good bike path right there that you could be using.
PS. In my walking experience, bikes are way more likely to see me if I’m crossing a crosswalk than cars. Sometimes cars drive right through when you’re waiting to cross, where a biker will usually acknowledge me and let me cross.
I didn’t see anyone else say this so I’ll chime in: when I’ve had to keep bulky things on a keyring (a CPR pocket mask comes to mind) I’ll put it on its own small keyring and then hang that on the main keyring with the keys. It isn’t a perfect solution, but it helps a lot.
Why does this read like an ad for cybertrucks for people who would want to run over deer
My sister and her friends use Reddit now for things that they never did before.
I hate feeling like the things I called about (3rd party apps, my comments not being used in AI, etc) just don’t matter for the majority of people, and Reddit is being rewarded monetarily for getting rid of people like me.
Without a profit motive, where is the incentive to work efficiently? The cost to get goods to market will include the cost of the inefficiencies in the market? The fact that the tobacco is being grown on a small plot instead of huge monocrop, etc.
How could this compete against a black market that has a profit motive to get costs low so they can take more for themselves
