Srsly wtf I saw that and immediately thought “Well that would be a great modern logo” its flat and sleek but still recognizable enough. Guess the marketing department didn’t want to admit “we got it right the first time”

361·1 month agoWhile I agree on some level that it might be easier and quicker to find out by simply putting it into a search engine I don’t want to deny the human aspect here. At the end of the day social media (and even reddit/lemmy …) is not “knowledge transfer” its about the interaction between humans. So if someone is faced with something new, especially in a thread where it seems to be a given that people know what it is, it makes sense to use that space to ask what it is everyone is discussing. And while a search might yield a generic result (maybe even a better worded explanation) a good faithed commenter might, in the given exampl, enot just explain what Linux is, but also why is relevant to the bigger discussion and also the commenter that orignally asked would have a way to ask further questions that might lead to a deeper understanding of the topic eve it if isn’t as efficient.
Tl;dr: Don’t just RTFM or LMGTFY someone. Take a minute to explain and welcome people into the lucky 10000

1·2 months agoIt heavily depends in your usecase but if you want to use gpg to encrypt emails and dont want to do it all in the terminal i really recommend using Thunderbird it integrates gpg very well and makes it mostly seamless.
Other than that afaik Kleopatra is the only standalone GUI for gpg simply because most of the time gpg is integrated in workflows (simply using the cli interface vor gpg libraries) and plain gpg for simple tex/file encryption/signing is just not a usecase.many people have

4·3 months agoSorry, last time I checked the Discussion got started with the article in fr on the 03.04. (Friday) which wasn’t a week ago but just before the weekend. And the discussion doesn’t seem “finished” to me.
Also as I commented at the comment mentioned by you they could have exempted article 3 from situations outside of “war”. Or they could have updated/changed it all together.

World News@lemmy.world•Uproar in Germany over law requiring men get military approval for long stays abroadEnglish
4·3 months agoDo you have a source that says the government has to grant your request? I tried scouring the law and it seems true but I struggle with the lingo.
Also the changes that were last made to the law seem to explicitly differentiate between war and none war situation as to which paragraphs are applied so they could have applied that paragraph only to situations of war. So I still think a Discussion and some scrutiny is warrented here as to why we “kept” this rule.
Oof. I consider myself a fairly decent Linux Sysadmin (~15 years experience ~10 years professionally) but I actually didn’t know about that. :/

3·3 months agoWhile i would generally agree I’ve fiddle with htpc and stuff for solo long. Then I broke down a few years ago and bought a cheap TV with GoogleTV (version 10 or something) on it. I removed some bloat via ADB but it still is GoogleTV do I get some ads on the home screen. However I installed SmartTube, Kodi, Jellyfin but also Netflix and Amazon Prime since those are the two services I still subscribed to. And I have to admit I’m a happy camper. I got used to ignoring the ads on the home screen and being able to directly play Netflix/YouTube … whatever without setting up a browser or something on top of Kodi or whatever is just such a breeze.

linuxmemes@lemmy.world•What booting from your first Linux ISO feels like
2·3 months agoOK I guess the people here don’t like to run their Install on AxeMurdererFS
Been using GNOME since ~ 3.8/3.10 (so i guess a while now) and out of the box it mostly just works for me. I have maybe 3-4 extensions none of which I desperately rely on (although TopIcons is clutch) and I agree with most design choices. I’ve thought about switching some times but I think all I would do is try to replicate my GNOME workflow elswhere so why bother?
No.
I’m an anarchist. I organize with Anti-authoritarian Communist though since most anarchist here are batshit 😅
Let me tell you:
I’ve been using Linux exclusively since ~2010 and moved my mum over back when XP got canned. Printers always have been and still are the bane of my existence. From what I know from other people working in IT printers are always bad, however of course the driver support situation in Linux is so much worse. My mum used to have a Samsung mfp that would print in Linux (most of the time) but I could not for the life of me figure out how to get it to scan reliably. In the end I’ve set her up with a dual boot with a simple “click here to switch to Windows” button so she could scan in there (saving the scans to a NAS)
From my experience printers mostly either work or don’t work in Linux. If you are looking for a new printer I’ve only had food experiences with Brother. If you already have a printer and it’s not working right I can recommend sxouring through forums for that one wisdom of the ancients that can help (and possibly sacrificing a goat)
I bow also have a Canon printer (it was a gift) and with the official Linux drivers it worked for years. Recently it just wouldn’t print from Linux anymore till I switched the drivers to the generic “Guteprint” now it’s printing fine again …
Tl;dr: printers are evil and Linux drivers are sometimes making them worse
