I think that’s a misunderstanding. ActivityPub the protocol that things like Lemmy or Mastodon are built upon is like email, connecting all the various implementations. Federation is more like choosing what you send to your spam folder if I’m trying to stay on the same metaphor.

No, but that was the whole marketing pitch for it. Now everyone is fine with censoring and rules as long as it aligns with their own beliefs.
