How can anyone possibly look at russia and think “I’ll have some of that please”? The place is a complete dystopia.

East Germany once was a key part of the communist block. The people have been groomed as soon as they could walk to love Mother Russia, as they were important. The GDR was the science and technology forefront, being the only eastern block country to have a chip production, for example.

This ended about 1990, 35 years ago. So one half of the current east German population grew up groomed. Then the reunification ended a lot of cozyness for some people (the state had basically be bankrupt, but they were used to live on that soft cushion), so ‘change bad, old times good’ was a common trope. Chanceller Helmut Kohl promised them ‘flowering lands’, which he could not really deliver.

Another generation grow up under the impression that the west had the duty to supply the old comforts in a way, and didn’t, despite the fact that we spent billions over billions in the east.

That’s why so many still long for ‘the good old days’ under the Russian boot. Or any other boot, for that.

Unironicly YES. They want their east germany back and think the AfD can give it back.

But always remeber its only ⅖ or so in all of east germany voting for Nazis
