  • The Chapotraphouse subreddit was radicalizing a lot of redditors when it was repeatedly hitting the front page of reddit fairly regularly and exposing people to counter-ideologies to liberalism that they never would have seen otherwise. Which is the reason why it (and then a slew of other popular lefty subs) had to be banned*. Despite all the lib-brained nonsense we have to constantly correct on this platform (the fediverse), there are an untold number of lurkers reading these discussions who are getting to see what actual leftist thought looks like when the narrow guardrails on the dominant narrative get removed. That exposure, especially when combined with witnessing the rapid intensifying of contradictions in their irl experiences, is enough to radicalize any thinking, genuinely open person. Lemmy being one of the few spaces on the internet where these things aren’t hidden or removed on sight absolutely plays a role in a lot of users’ leftward political evolution.

*It’s also why the fed instances like .world and piefed preemptively defederate, block, and continuously slander and demonize all of the leftist instances. They are literally trying to mitigate the spread of leftism that is inevitable when exposure to thought that’s outside the dominant ideology has a chance to get seen and voiced.

  • The liberals just think that there are inherently evil people like story book villains who have to play the role by throwing a wrench in what would otherwise be a perfectly peaceful and happy capitalist world order since that’s what antagonists do. It’s a form of Great Man Theory; everything would be fine if it weren’t for the bad guys, in this case Putin, who just want to take over for the sake of their own personal vanity. There doesn’t need to be any reasons for the war beyond that for liberals. It’s only materialists who have to worry about looking for material causes of things.

  • Oh but it is in question. Just ask literally any lib in the fediverse. The Narrative tells us that all of that was just part of how Ukraine is democratic, unlike the totalitarian Russia. If it was a coup, then it was a coup that the wholesome Ukrainian people (none of them Nazis) all wanted. Only the tankies, having fallen for the Russian Disinformation and become Russian bots themselves believe that it was a actual “coup,” so we always have to put it in scare quotes and snicker about how easily misled the authoritarian tankies are. Have you been living under a rock or something, tankie?

Edit: Seriously though, articles like this are taken by the liberals as more evidence that the coup didn’t happen, you know, because the evil Voldemort Putler said it. That’s literally what the scare quotes are about. The article is reinforcing the false idea that the coup is just Russian disinformation, relying on the fact that they’ve already made everyone believe that Putin is the villain antagonist of the story they’ve crafted. They’re expecting everyone reading to roll their eyes at the “dictator” and say to themselves the same kind of foolish thing bobzer@lemmy.zip said below, casting doubt on the fact that the coup happened.

  • No, that one belongs in the shared space too. It was Biden who literally bombed the infrastructure that made it possible for Germany to meet its energy needs without reliance on buying US oil/lng. Who froze all foreign assets that belonged to Afghanistan, essentially stealing billions of dollars that belonged to the Afghani people? Biden. Who froze all Russian assets and tried to make it illegal on a global scale to do business with “the bad guy” state? Biden. And while you may hate Russia if you’re a typical propagandized westerner, that doesn’t mean most of the rest of the world, particularly global south countries, do as well.

    From 3 years ago:

“With Russia losing access to its foreign currency reserves, a message has been sent to all countries that they can’t count on these money stashes to actually be theirs in the event of tension. As such, it may make less and less sense for global reserve managers to hold dollars for safety, given that they could be taken away right when they’re most needed. Russia isn’t the first country to get this lesson in recent months. The Biden administration’s move to seize Afghanistan’s cash assets and prevent their access by the Taliban was another recent signal that reserves can be frozen.”

That was all thanks to the Democrats during the Biden regime. Trump is putting as many nails into that coffin as he can, but we shouldn’t pretend Republicans are the only ones responsible for showing the world that the dollar is dangerous and the US cannot be trusted.
