I didn’t vote for Trump, this is not a justification for anything he is doing, this is purely me trying to find any crumb of hope in this abysmal situation.
The country was in decline for at least a decade before Trump took office. So far everything has been a slow boil and we Americans just take it imo.
Maybe Trump will make everything so awful so quickly it will force actual change. Basically we were slowly heating the water and when it turned lukewarm Trump just cranked the heat up to max, maybe the frog realizes this and jumps out.

That’s what I hoped would happen the first time but here we are.
Country was in decline since at least the 1970s.
Starving people solve overpopulation /s
I hope so
that"s like saying the benfit of stage four cancer is that you get to lose weight
If you are looking for silver linings, just look at the positive political effect trump is having in other countries, such as Australia and Canada :)
As a Canadian, I’m relieved the conservatives didn’t win the election but I would have rather preferred the NDP win. A lot of people like myself really wanted to vote NDP but voted liberal out of fear of vote-splitting leading to a conservative win. We’ve forsaken the left wing party to stave off the right wing party.
We barely rejected the right wing nuts, and they could easily take the next election. While relief is warranted, we should not be smug or complacent about it, either. Lies more faster than the truth, it’s still an uphill battle for morality and decency.
But there also countries where trump inspired and popularized far-right parties
Yes but I’m trying to find positives for the OP, not negatives 🤫
one of the main silver linings before his 2nd term was that he was destroying the gop from within while hes ranting and riling up his base, and attacking any gop not supporting him.
Depends on how bad it gets. People respond to life being full of shit they don’t like by complaining, then when things go back to normal they’re like, “Whew, glad that’s over,” and find more stuff to complain about, but as long as they’re still in one piece they’re good to just tolerate life. That’s what happened after Trump’s first term and now here we are again, because it never got truly bad enough to do more than bitch and moan for a while.
To get motivated enough to really DO something about the world, people have to be seriously traumatized and broken. I’m talking about actual homelessness, going hungry for extended periods, getting thrown in prison, that kind of thing. Experiencing angst from scrolling through disappointing news didn’t do it last time and won’t do it this time.
If Trump’s second term makes things awful enough to facilitate actual change, “awful” is gonna have to be a lot worse than anything we’ve ever seen.
If Trump’s second term makes things awful enough to facilitate actual change, “awful” is gonna have to be a lot worse than anything we’ve ever seen.
That’s already the case
Technically correct, but you clearly have no idea how bad life can get.
It isn’t. Not yet, at least.
Most Americans still have jobs, can afford food, can find food, and have their cars and homes. Some have lost some of the former, it’s true, but not enough to ignite any real change.
Imagine a scenario of Trump enacting martial law and beginning to mass arrest and imprison US citizens in detention camps. Not immigrants, refugees, or tourists - actual US citizens taken from their homes. Imagine the US government gathering troops on the Canadian border. Imagine the government disappearing members of the Democrat party. Imagine the government enacting a China-styled internet blockade.
Those are the things that will likely spark some kind of call for change.
Happened with Hoover so I fucking hope the American public will learn and vote for an FDR
It’s looking like they will, but then the results will be fudged.
Absolutely not, not only will this administration not make anything better everything will become significantly worse. For this example I will assume that there is an election in 2028 (massive assumption, ill get to what if there isnt):
- The Democrats will run a Trump lite but with absolutely nothing Trump had that made him popular, instead the next Democratic candidate will essentially copy Trumps policies but not as bad and more efficiently. See how the Democrats responded to Reagan and Bush.
- When the Democrats go significantly further to the right so will the Republicans, in 2034 the Democrats will be as right wing as Trump is today. This will become the new norm, Fascism will be an openly accepted talking point, and everything will get worse.
- Bipartisan legislation will ensure fascism remains uncontested and nobody will vote third party since thats a “waste of a vote”. People on world and other similar liberal platforms will insist its the fault of third party voters and nonvoters for not voting hard enough. Massive campaigns will occur where the Democrats insist that even though they only ever pass bipartisan legislation and that legislation is always fascist they’re 5% better than the Republicans.
But we may not even have a 2028 election and if so:
- People will make large protests that get shut down quickly.
- Fascism takes hold, few resist
- Things get worse
Thats called “Accelerationism” and its stupid, as history keeps proving
For every action there’s an equal and opposite reaction?
Positive change is not the plan. As per “The Despoiling of America”, the plan is to break American society until people are so destitute they will accept any change. At that point, Trump declares martial law and governs through presidential decree. He uses the special powers he has given himself to remove the separation of church and state and Avada Kadava, you have an evangelical dictatorship. Combined with vote suppression, evangelicals will be in power forever.
The country was in decline for at least a decade before Trump took office.
Well 4 years of that decade was Trump being in office, and 4 other years was the result of people being willing to vote in literally anyone who wasn’t him. So really 8 years of that decade was Trump’s fault. And the other two years? Not bad.
As for the rest, Trump is cutting funding for research like crazy. That won’t just affect things today, that’s going to make stuff shitty for decades. And that’s exactly the kind of harm that the emotion-laden American news and social media simply won’t cover. So I don’t think there will be a backlash, rather the opposite - politicians will realize bullying scientists, government agencies, immigrants, and other voiceless Trump targets is just good politics, and keep doing it.
Of course future prediction is hard, so who knows what will happen. But I’m not seeing the path for this to turn around anytime soon. The same media that created MAGA, and made it even more popular 4 years after it proved itself to be a horrific disaster is the same media we have today. Democrats will probably win the next two elections because people can see what Trump is doing in real time, but after that I have no hope for America. If I have to predict the future, I’d guess the EU becomes the new global leader, driven by relatively high democracy and pro-science policies compared to the rest of the world. This could even occur in a relatively short time frame, like 5 years.
