When my grandma died, all her spoons were placed in a basket at the entrance to the church. She had 8 kids, dozens of grandkids, and lived in a small town of 500. Everyone she knew that was alive came and took a spoon.
There were left over spoons
I think owning lots of decorative spoons is some old lady flex that we cannot comprehend
I love that idea!
Thank you.

Old fads are so funny. Like those ceramic thimbles.
My grandmother was into collecting thimbles, when she was still alive.
As a child, whenever I went away somewhere on a trip with my parents and we saw a souvenir thimble, I’d always want to get it for her.
Looking back as an adult, I’m quite sure now that she didn’t really care that much about the thimbles at all, especially towards the end. What she really cared about was the connection it created, and the relationship with her grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
It’s nice to know what someone likes, and to think of them when you see it. And every time I saw thimbles I thought of her.
In a modern context I have a friend who likes frogs, and every time I see a random frog plush or weird frog toothbrush holder or whatever it is I always think of him and want to get it for him.
Fads change but I think the reason for having them stays the same. It’s nice to be into something, and for other people to know you’re into it, too :)
i worked for an auctioneer who had thousands of these souvenir spoons. i’d post 10 or 15 for sale on his ebay account every week and they all sold for between $20-$40 each
edit: they don’t go for near that much anymore. antiques are dead
What’s in vogue changes as the age demographic changes. Previously, it was spoons, now it’s 90s video games.
I’m a Millennial and have a collection of these. IDK why – probably because they’re small and cheap and therefore pretty convenient as a souvenir – but back when I was a kid I just got in the habit of grabbing one whenever I traveled.
I also have a jar of pressed pennies because, again, small and cheap.
Wikipedia’s Emglish server is down, we’ll have to settle for English: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elongated_coin
Whoops! I had edited the URL from en.m.wikipedia.org so it would be a normal desktop-site link, but apparently screwed it up. I’ve fixed it now, though.
Everyone’s grandparents’ really good China is worthless because it’s a dead fad. Keep it because it’s special and don’t feel bad about using it, or if your grandparents missed the fad and you want some, buy a set for practically nothing at a thrift store
Smash it like the office space computer and feel amazing.
Printer, it was the Office Space printer, the fuck is a PC load letter‽
Wow…I miss read your response and all I could think was…They are funny but we’re talking about Grandma’s spoons, well I bet THEY would collect spoons too, especially the old funny ones, this all check out…Rereads it, OHHHHH FADS…Please don’t tell the Velvet Mafia on me
I was looking for this comment. My nana has a huge thing of thimbles from every single trip they’ve ever taken. It’s pretty cute tbh
Or my dad: B E L L S
I absolutely love this.
Is it wordplay on “Schooner?” Spooner?
I barely even know her!
It wasn’t until the third time I scrolled past this one the pun finally hit me. I was stuck at “spoon sloop? Sploop? Sloon?”
Can someone help me understand this meme format? Why is it “no one:”? Shouldn’t it be “everyone:”?
I get the joke in general but the words make no sense to me.
Fuck, I’ve asked so many people this and all they say is “idk it’s just the meme format”
WHY THOUGH.
Fucking brainless…
People can’t don’t double negatives it seems.
No one as in “no one asked.”
No one asked to see Nana’s spoon collection, but here she goes showing it off anyway
They’re doing it in response to nothing, I guess. It’s really overused and only makes sense in certain circumstances.

I always wondered who buys all those spoons you see in gift shops, and how they display them. Now I know.
It’s always keyrings, fridge magnets, spoons, thimbles, etc, but you never see bugs any more. They were like a little pom-pom thing with a label saying where it was from and googly eyes, and the feet were a sticker.
My dad had a load of them on a big sheet of perspex on the back shelf of the car, and having grown up and seen the Final Destination movies, I can say that was a terrible idea and he could have decapitated all four of us in an accident.
I don’t remember those and I’m old. I do remember the thimbles and salt and pepper shakers though. I’m googling the bugs but just getting stupid Etsy links.
These are about the closest I can find.

This would have been late 80s I’d guess.
Oh wow, I don’t remember them.
My nana used to have a collection of spoons in holders like this in her dining room. Thanks for the double hit of nostalgia and serotonin.
Nice isn’t it?
Didn’t find a single salad fingers reference, i must be getting old… :/
Well well if it isn’t Hubert Cumberdale, back from the Great War
Do you think she only got the ship once she had enough spoons to fill it, and then just put up her favorite ones? I imagine it would be embarrassing to have a half full spoon ship.
I’ve seen ones with empty spaces waiting to be filled back in the 80s myself.
kid named finger:
Somebody wants a word with you
Neo: There is no spoon.
Nana:
Finally, I will have enough spoons to properly clean my room!
